We say NO to Panathenea
In recent days, the tech gathering “Panathenea” has sparked widespread outrage in Athens due to its inclusion of Israeli and Israel-related entities. All the local artists on the line up have cancelled their participation. In response, the organisers have attempted to deflect blame, claiming they are merely some “20 somethings” facing unfair scrutiny. A closer look at Panathenea’s agenda reveals that its issues run far deeper than its relationship to Israel. The event is not a neutral forum for innovation, as they claim; it is a platform for corporate exploitation, a hyper-capitalist market, fully endorsed by the current conservative government of Greece. While Panathenea claims to “discuss the future,” it excludes almost completely the very voices that care about the human cost of technology.
A look at the line-up reveals an absence of:
Critical Thinkers: Almost no academic researchers or investigative journalists are presenting.
Digital Defenders: No tech labour organisers, whistleblowers, or digital rights archivists are participating.
Civil Society: No NGOs, charities or alternative tech collectives have been invited. Instead, the “naive” organisers have practiced 100% corporate gatekeeping, turning Athens into a playground for international CEOs, venture capitalists and dangerous, historically illiterate, techno-futurists.
This is not a festival; it is a full-on investors’ market. The corporations taking the stage at Panathenea are not harmless innovators. Some of the companies represented at this event stand accused of: Military utilisation of data Endorsing biometric surveillance Tech monopoly and tax avoidance Bypassing consumer protection laws Manipulating AI ethics and cultures Environmental destruction Severe labour rights abuses Spreading misinformation Exploiting artists The criticism regarding Israel is just one piece of a much larger, dangerous puzzle that we increasingly see in Athens. It is not a surprise that Panathenea comes at a time when real estate practices are at their most aggressive, making our own city financially unavailable to its inhabitants. We refuse to let Athens be used to launder the reputations of corporations that profit from surveillance, war, climate destruction, and labour exploitation.
We say NO to Panathenea
NO to corporate “futures”
NO to genocide.
